BURNING
This picture shows a man using a burning torch to cut steel. The
problem was to show the shower of sparks, and the man himself.
The original is a colour slide.
The camera was set on a tripod and the picture focused to find
the camera to subject distance. Once this was known, say 3
metres, the flash exposure could be found for a MANUAL exposure.
The gun was on the camera and the distance divided into the guide
number of the gun for the film in use - 100 ISO. If the guide
number were 33 in metres, then the aperture to set would be F11.
Now that the exposure on the man would be correct, and the FLASH
is providing the shutter speed in effect - probably faster than
1/1000 th. second, the camera shutter speed was set to 1/30 th.
second. This allowed the trail of sparks to be recorded by their
own light.
Various setting were tried to achieve the desired result. One
shot is rarely enough. If you have taken the trouble to set
something up, shoot a number of versions.
